SKIN UP!: An Educational Guide

SKIN UP! is a spin-off side-project in a similar vein to GROW UP! and exploits an image scanner as a capture device. The scanner is not used as it was meant to be used and functioned more like a moving, directional camera with long exposure, but it takes images of photographic quality and the scanner bed became a film set.

SKIN UP! persues the appropriation of 'base materials' to fill the empty frames, which is similar to automatic writing in the sense that you use what first comes to you, creating the backdrop for the 'sketch' or animation from the most readily available sources. This animation data collected from the 'film set' provided pictorial images alone as opposed to the more traditionally scanned 'GROW UP!', and written text was added as a seperate action, based upon the contents of the frame.

From here the contents of proceding frames revealed themselves as the Shaman consumed the sacrament and the Artist captured the act, their roles intertwining briefly. The written text, although not really necessary, can be seen as the artists representation of the the thought process of the shaman.
